READY FOR JUNIOR CHALLENGE While drag racing ace Ben Bray was chasing points in the ANDRA Top Doorslammer championship at Willowbank Raceway’s Castrol EDGE Tin Top Titles at the weekend, he was also sure to take time for some careful R & D ahead of his Junior Dragster Challenge against Phil Lamattina, scheduled for May 30. The three-time national champion caught up with 13 year old Junior Dragster pilot Jake Donnelly over the weekend, milking the opportunity to gleam some advice from the youngster as well as try his hand at fitting in the car. Bray will take on Top Fuel racer and current championship leader Lamattina on May 30, with the Mildura carrot farmer set to take the wheel of the Wallace Bishop Jewellers Junior Jem of Cody Grohn in the challenge which will precede the season-ending Castrol EDGE Winternationals (June 4-7). “I never thought I would get the chance to race Phil with him being in Top Fuel and me in Top Doorslammer, so I am really looking forward to the chance to take him on and hopefully whip him,” chuckled Bray. “Jake has been showing me around the car and giving me a few pointers which is helping me remember some things from my days in the category, so I am hoping that gives me an edge over Phil who has never raced a JD before. “It has also been good to have a sit in the car, it is a bit of a squeeze in there! “I think Phil will be taking the chance to have a look at Cody’s ride in Sydney in two weeks so I might have to wander over and see if I can psych him out! “At the end of the day, the Cosmic Enterprises Junior Dragster Challenge on May 30 is all about the kids and it is just great to be able to get behind the project and at the same time have three match races against someone of Phil's caliber – it is going to be great fun.” Scheduled for the weekend prior to the 2009 Castrol Edge Winternationals, the inaugural Cosmic Enterprises Australian Junior Dragster Challenge will provide an estimated 50 to 60 Junior Dragster racers and their families from all over Australia with the opportunity to compete in multiple race brackets over a full day’s racing. The day’s action will then be followed by the presentation BBQ and family entertainment, including fireworks, providing a relaxed, fun racing atmosphere and the perfect Castrol EDGE Winternationals preparation. Organised by Cosmic Enterprises with the strong support of Willowbank Raceway and Lifestyle Australia, along with a host of bracket and special award sponsors, the event is being run on a non-profit basis with all sponsorship going to provide prizes, gift bags, catering and entertainment for the competitors and their families.
