BRAY READY TO ROCK JUNIOR DRAGSTERS Over 65 Junior Dragster specialists from across the country will converge on Willowbank Raceway this Saturday for the Cosmic Enterprises Junior Dragster Challenge, Saturday May 30. The one-day Junior Dragster only event will allow these pint-sized racers aged eight through to 17 to take to the track ahead of next weekend’s season-ending Castrol EDGE Winternationals, which will feature the largest ever field of Junior Dragsters with 87 entered. Also getting in on the fun while preparing for their own Winternationals campaigns in a slightly unusual way will be Professional Drag Racing stars Phil Lamattina and Ben Bray of Top Fuel and Top Doorslammer respectively. The Mildura carrot farmer and the local legend will be hopping aboard the Wallace Bishop Jewellers Junior Jem of Cody Grohn and the Donnelly Building Services Junior Dragster of Jake Donnelly for three match races at 10.25am. “I am really looking forward to getting behind the wheel of the Wallace Bishop Jewellers Junior Jem on Saturday,” said Lamattina. “Unfortunately I haven’t had much of a chance to even have a look at Cody’s rail so I will be taking full advantage of the opportunity to give it a look-over once I get to the track on Friday night. “It will be good fun to go and take on Benny on the quarter mile as we don’t ever get to race each other being in different classes, but when it comes down to it this event is all about the kids and the next batch of young racers coming through the sport and looking after them, so I am happy to be able to help out.” Unlike Lamattina, Bray has been able to take the opportunity to get up close and personal with his entry, with 13-year-old Jake Donnelly gleefully helping push the Kallangur resident and three time national champion into the tight fit of his dragster at the recent Castrol EDGE Tin Top Titles at Willowbank Raceway. “It is a pretty tight squeeze in there that is for sure, but Saturday is going to be heaps of fun,” said Bray. “It is all about the kids and I am really happy to be involved, and it is going to be great to take on Phil on the quarter mile as it is really something I never thought I would get the chance to do. “They call him ‘Lucky Phil’ after his big accident here a few years back, so we will just have to see if he is lucky on Saturday or if I can beat him in Jake’s Donnelly Building Services machine!” The inaugural Cosmic Enterprises Australian Junior Dragster Challenge will provide Junior Dragster racers and their families with the opportunity to compete in multiple race brackets over a full day’s racing followed by a social evening featuring presentation BBQ and family entertainment. It will provide a relaxed, fun racing atmosphere and the perfect Castrol Edge Winternationals preparation. Organised by Cosmic Enterprises with the strong support of Willowbank Raceway and Lifestyle Australia, along with a host of sponsors, the event is being run on a non-profit basis with all sponsorship going to provide prizes, gift bags, catering and entertainment for the competitors and their families.
